Moody, Hall and Wyman Mountains and Surplus Pond

Between the fall I took 2 days ago and sleeping on a bench Sunday night, I woke feeling sore all over. I had to wait out a storm, but got moving back on the Trail at about 9 a.m. We crossed Black Brook and began the fairly gentle climb up Moody Mountain (elevation 2,400+ feet). The hike down the following side proved more challenging, with rock scrambles and ladders. Forest and I had to negotiate those carefully; our teamwork sometimes surprises even me. Next, we crossed Sawyer Brook and climbed out of the notch to Hall Mountain Lean-to, where we stopped for a break. We had navigated 4 miles total with 1,000 feet up, 1,000 feet down and another 1,400 feet up, so we were pretty tired.

The final climb for this section was up Wyman Mountain, which took us through pine forest. We were still 2 miles from our destination for the day, and a heavy fog had set in and it was getting dark fast. We pushed on. By the time we reached Surplus Pond, collected water and set up camp, night had fallen. Hopefully, we'll both sleep better tonight in our hammocks.
